Workplace design is constantly evolving. New colors emerge, materials come back around, residential influences find their way into commercial spaces, and new products change what’s possible.
That’s part of what makes design exciting.
But when you’re investing in a workplace that needs to serve your organization for years to come, following what’s popular can’t be the only consideration. The goal is to find the right balance between ideas that make a space feel fresh today and thoughtful decisions that will continue to work tomorrow.
We recently asked our COE design team what’s catching their attention right now, and what they believe will always have a place in great workplace design. While their answers covered everything from bold color and natural elements to ergonomics and classic materials, one thing became clear: trendy and timeless don’t have to compete.
The best workplaces can make room for both.
What’s Trending? More Personality, Nature and Color
One thing our design team is excited to see right now is more personality making its way into the workplace.
There’s a continued interest in bringing nature indoors through living plants, natural light, organic materials, incorporated planters, moss, and living walls. These elements can add visual interest while helping create an environment that feels more connected to the natural world.

Our team is also watching some bolder residential influences make their way into commercial spaces.
Color drenching is one example. Rather than limiting a strong color to a single accent, color drenching can create a more immersive visual moment. Even in a small vignette, it can make a statement. In a larger workplace, it offers an opportunity to ground a space, draw attention, and bring more life into the environment.
Pattern is having a moment, too. Checkered and plaid patterns are showing up more often, while finishes like light bronze offer another way to add something fresh without completely changing the character of a space.

Together, these ideas point toward workplaces with a little more personality, spaces where nature, texture, pattern, finishes, and color can all play a role.
The Materials We’re Loving Right Now
Sometimes the details that seem smallest can have a surprisingly large effect on how a workplace comes together.
Right now, our designers are gravitating toward everything from light wood tones and neutral palettes with accent colors to bouclé and other textured fabrics. On hard surfaces, matte handmade-looking tile and veined quartz are catching their attention.
Another favorite is charcoal metal trim in place of stark black.
The difference may be subtle, but that’s part of the appeal. Charcoal is slightly softer while still pairing beautifully with true black finishes. Using the two together can help darker elements stand out while softening an otherwise aggressive palette.

None of these choices needs to dominate an entire workplace.
A finish here, a textured material there, or a more adventurous use of color can be enough to give a space character.
Then There Are the Things That Last
For every trend we’re excited about, there are also design decisions our team believes have real staying power.
Ergonomic furniture is high on that list.
Workplace aesthetics may evolve, but furniture that supports the people using it continues to matter. Adjustable furniture can accommodate different bodies and needs while helping people remain comfortable throughout the workday.

Materials can have staying power, too.
Terrazzo continues to stand out for its longevity and classic appearance while offering enough variation in color and tone to complement many different design styles. Wood trim is another element our team considers timeless.
These aren’t necessarily the loudest elements in a workplace.
That’s precisely why they can make such a strong foundation.
Trend and Timeless Can Work Together
A workplace doesn’t have to fall into one camp. You can create a strong foundation using ergonomic furniture, durable materials, and elements you know will continue to serve the organization, and still leave room for personality.
Maybe that’s a color-drenched moment that immediately catches your attention.
Maybe it’s a lounge filled with texture and softer finishes.
Maybe it’s greenery integrated throughout the environment.
Or maybe it’s a subtle shift from black to charcoal that changes the feeling of the overall palette.
The goal isn’t to incorporate every new idea that comes along. It’s to understand which ideas make sense for your organization and which choices deserve to become part of the foundation.
Good Design Starts With Understanding Your Space
Ultimately, the trendiest office isn’t necessarily the best office.
Neither is the one designed to avoid trends altogether.
A workplace needs to support the people inside it while reflecting the organization itself. That means considering how people work, how you want the environment to feel, what needs to stand the test of time, and where there’s room to have a little fun.
That’s also why the design process shouldn’t begin with a list of what’s popular. It should begin with questions.
What’s working in your workplace today? What isn’t? How do you want people to feel when they walk through the door? What needs to function differently? What should the space say about your organization?
From there, we can help you sort through the trends, materials, products, and possibilities to create a workplace that’s thoughtfully designed for today and ready for what’s next.
